Foreign Language Proficiency Exams
Foreign language proficiency exams are offered at the beginning of
each fall and spring semester and are open to both new students and continuing students. You MAY
NOT TAKE a foreign language proficiency exam, however, if you
- have taken the proficiency exam before.
- have already earned college credit in the language. This includes AP credit, IB credit, community college
credit, and UIUC course credit.
- are not actively enrolled at UIUC for the current semester.
- are enrolled at UIUC as an exchange student or another type of non-degree student.
- are a graduate student.
The next opportunity to take the French, German, and Spanish
Proficiency Exams will be August 25, 2008 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The Spanish Proficiency
Exam will be offered in 100 Noyes, and the French and German Proficiency Exams will be
offered in 141 Wohlers. (If Noyes fills up and if there is still room at Wohlers,
Spanish test takers will be assigned to Wohlers.) You may sign up for only one of
the three exams. Click
here to register.

here for information on earning proficiency credit in a foreign language other than French, German and Spanish.
Even if you fulfilled your UIUC
foreign language requirement, you may want to consider taking a foreign language proficiency
exam because you could earn up to 8 hours of credit towards your graduation requirements.
If you earn credit from a foreign language proficiency exam,
it will be recorded on your academic record. You do not need to do anything more. One way to
check your credit is to log in to UI-Integrate > Registration and Records > Student Records
and Transcripts > View Academic History.
