College Teaching and Academic Careers
College and university professors
traditionally have been better prepared in the practice of research than
in the practice of teaching. This course is designed to help prepare
future members of the professoriate for their teaching duties. The course will be both
theoretical and applied, with many opportunities for dialogue and
feedback. Participants will acquire an advanced skill level and understanding
in the philosophy and practice of teaching and learning in
the college and university setting.

Course Credit: 4 graduate

Prerequisite: Completion of a campus or
departmental orientation for teaching assistants.
Course Objectives: Through classroom
discussions, assignments, and in-class exercises, students will:
- become aware of diversity and individual
differences in student populations, and student developmental and
learning stages
- explain and use a number of instructional
methods
- devise plans for classroom organization and
management
- identify resources and technology available to
enhance teaching and learning
- create a personal statement of teaching and
scholarship
- become aware of the diversity of roles of the faculty member in
the university and college setting
- engage in scholarly teaching and investigate
issues in the scholarship of teaching and learning
