Recognition For
Excellent Teaching
Excellence in Instruction Awards: The
University of Illinois offers several campus
level awards in recognition of excellence in undergraduate education,
graduate and professional teaching, extramural teaching, advising, and
research. While only faculty and/or academic staff are eligible
for many of the awards, the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate
Teaching is open to teaching assistants. Winners receive a
monetary reward and are honored at the Annual University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign Instructional Awards Banquet. These awards are
provided by the Office of the Provost. More information on the
various awards can be found at:
http://www.provost.uiuc.edu/departments/awards/inst.html.
Other teaching awards: In addition to the all-campus awards, many departments
and colleges give annual awards to their best
instructors. These awards are often funded by
organizations who hire UIUC graduates or are given in memory of former
students or faculty members. The recipients of such awards are usually
honored at the Annual University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Instructional Awards Banquet as well as departmental events.
A List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their
Students: A List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by
Their Students is published by the Center for Teaching Excellence. This list is based on the previous semester's
student Instructor and Course Evaluation System (ICES) ratings on the
first two general ICES items, "Rate the Instructor's Overall Teaching
Effectiveness" and "Rate the Overall Quality of this Course." To be
included in the list, instructors must meet the following criteria on
ICES item #1 and #2:

Instructors have to give permission
before their student ratings can be considered for inclusion on the
List. Instructors do so by completing the release
option of Box 7 on the ICES request form. If an instructor teaches
more than one course during a semester, only one section's mean needs to
be high enough to be on the list. Outstanding ratings are designated by an
asterisk preceding each name and indicate that the instructor is
among the top 10%. The list appears in the Daily Illini, the student
newspapers, early in the semester following the one in which the ratings
were collected. Previous
